Foundation Policy Statement

The Irving and Phyllis Millstein Foundation for Animal Welfare® was founded to protect and support the welfare of animals and to further the bonds and relationships between animals and people. The Foundation is An Animal-Centered Philanthropy®, concerned with both animal care and human welfare. The Foundation’s primary purpose is to support the welfare of animals, while emphasizing and preserving the bonds between animals and humans, and to help organizations who help create and maintain those relationships. The Foundation provides funding for placing and keeping animals in caring homes; rescue; facilities construction or rehabilitation; veterinary care and training; veterinary equipment; animal-based services and therapies; and spay and neutering services for community animals. One of the Foundation’s key objectives is to fund services that prevent pet surrender and euthanasia, and to overcome economic and geographic barriers to care. This funding helps those who struggle to afford pet food, supplies, and needed veterinary services. Most of the funding we issue is for cat, dog, and horse populations. These are animals that have traditionally lived with and worked alongside humans. They have become an integral part of human culture. The Foundation issues grants to 501(c)(3) nonprofit agencies in New York City, Long Island, Illinois, Vermont, and Greater Philadelphia. The Foundation also issues grants to organizations that have a national impact. Whenever possible, the Foundation uses a systems approach to grantmaking. We issue grants to create or bolster key aspects of the animal welfare networks we support, thus strengthening the networks. The Irving and Phyllis Millstein Foundation for Animal Welfare does not accept unsolicited grant applications. We do accept inquiries through the contact page of our website. If writing to us, please provide a description of your organization, note whether your organization has 501(c)(3) status, and if the organization has a website, please provide a link to it.
